Jiangxi is facing a double challenge of flooding and the pressure to protect dykes. While the dyke protection work is being carried out urgently, rescue and relocation of people trapped in the flood are also being implemented.

Huang Huoxiu - a man from Panyang - was waiting for the rescue team to come out of the danger zone when he saw a neighbor who was taking his 3 children to escape the flooded house.

"Don’t try to go any farther out there, the water is deep, be careful not to drown," Huang shouted warning.

Within half an hour after the dike break on Monday, water flooded the second floor of Huang’s house. She quickly moved the furniture to the 3rd floor and waited for people to come and rescue.

Ms. Huang’s Qiaotou village in Shangao County, Jiangxi is one of many villages flooded due to continuous dike breaks. At least 20,000 Jiangxi residents were trapped inside the house after floodwaters poured in. They do not have electricity and clean water, according to SCMP.

The Jiangxi government warns that the water level in Panyang Lake could surpass a record 22.59 meters during a historic flood in July 1998 in China, which has killed more than 4,000 people.

On the night of 10.7, the water level at Panyang Lake was nearly 22 meters high.

“It is likely that the water level in Panyang will surpass the 1998 water level in the next few days. Many measures are being taken to deal with the flood, ”said Chen Guiya, deputy director of the Yangtze River Commission.

Thuong Nghieu rescue team still went to every house to check if anyone was stuck in the flood or not.

"We are most afraid of going, the motorboat can get into garbage, moss and stall engine. Then we ourselves become trapped again. We followed a well-trained villager to prevent us from hitting the wall, the wire under the water, ”said Sun Chao, a lifeguard.

When the boat reached a house, one must fasten it with rope and climb inside. People who are rescued often carry blankets, clothes and valuable belongings.

In Jiangzhou, Jiangxi, the government calls on all people aged 18 - 60 to participate in flood rescue and dyke reinforcement.
