Important export markets

Information from the Asia-Africa Market Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), China has the largest annual area of fruit and litchi production in the world. Fabrics are grown in provinces in the southern part of the Changjiang River, such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Hainan and some other provinces with lower yields such as Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan.

The crop harvest in China usually starts from mid-February to the end of July every year, sooner and longer than the fabric harvest of Vietnam due to the soil conditions, climate and richer varieties.

In 2018, China ’s fabric area is about 542,000 hectares with output of about 2.3 million tons, a record high in recent years. However, China still imports fresh litchi from other markets every year, mostly from Vietnam.

Due to a warm winter, dryness and little rain, the flowering ability of litchi in 2019 in localities with large areas of planting and production reached a low rate, leading to the production of litchi in the Central Vietnam China reduced (fabric output in Guangdong - local accounts for about 50% of total Chinese fabric output decreased by about 40% compared to 2018).

In the previous years, at the end of the season (from mid-June to the end of July), the domestic market price of Chinese cloths will often decrease compared to the previous periods because the quality of the last litchi fruit is not equal. However, with the actual price and output volume in 2019, the average price of litchi in China’s domestic market is expected to be higher than in 2018.

According to the General Department of Customs, in the 2018 crop year, Vietnamese enterprises exported more than 92,000 tons of fabric, worth more than 40.8 million USD, an increase of 172% in volume and a strong increase of 126% in value compared to 2017 crop.

Export to China has accounted for 90.7% of total fabric exports of the country in this crop year.

The report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that China is not only the market that brings the largest export turnover of vegetables and fruits of Vietnam, but also accounts for an increasing market share in the export structure of vegetable and fruit industry.

If in 2013, China accounted for 28% of Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export market share, then in 2014 it reached 30%. By 2015, China has jumped to become a market that accounts for 65% of Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export market share, up to 2016-2017, accounting for 70.8% and 75.7% of Vietnam vegetable and fruit export market share respectively. .

In recent years, the export turnover of Vietnamese vegetables and fruits to the Chinese market has also been continuously recorded with double-digit growth and this has contributed to helping this industry achieve an average growth rate of over 32 % in the period from 2011-2017.
